Curators’ Choice: Objects Selected from the Museum’s Collections

April 12 to July 27, 2008

What’s your passion?  Are you a collector?  If you were turned loose in a museum’s archives what items would you select to share with others?

paintingCurators’ Choice: Objects Selected from the Museum’s Collections, literally brings this scenario to life in a fascinating exhibition that features multiple displays of items selected by a variety of Museum staff and volunteers – the “curators” who work with the Museum’s collections on a daily basis.  They were invited to choose items that they consider “special” -- pieces whose value may (or may not) be monetary, but that are undeniably unique.

Through this exhibition, visitors will discover how curators think and learn why they chose what they did.  Some of the voices we will hear are those of Museum Executive Director Jeannette O’Malley, Director of Exhibitions Ardis Willwerth, Collections Manager Laura Verlaque, Assistant Archivist Kirk Meyers, Education Program Coordinator Brad Macneil, Development Associate Cedar Phillips, Membership & Development Coordinator Michelle Turner;and Museum Volunteer/Researchers Betsy Behny, Bob Bennett, Gary Cowles, Lynne Emery, Sid Gally,Tim Gregory, Eric Haack, Phil Kovinick, Roberta Martinez, Elizabeth Pomeroy, Ann Scheid, Carol Watson, Janet Kadin, Betsy Smalley and Bill Warren.

Their selections include: art, crafts, antiques, paintings, textiles, ceramics, furniture, books, newspapers, photographs, postcards, sports items, illustrations, plans, maps, city directories, phonographs, records, advertisements and vintage clothing.  As a museum of history and culture, Pasadena Museum of History’s extensive collections reflect an encyclopedic scope.  Through Curators’ Choice, PMH will highlight a special selection of locally collected objects that reflect some of the interests/themes of our community’s culture.
