Volunteers are vital!
We offer our volunteers a unique opportunity to utilize their skills, interests, and enthusiasms. We match assignments with the volunteer's available time and interests. Many of our volunteers are professionals in their own fields, others are anxious to explore new fields and learn new skills. Volunteers also enjoy the opportunity to make new friends who share their interests.

There is a monthly volunteer meeting the 1st Saturday of each month from September to May (due to the Labor Day holiday, the September meeting is on the second Saturday) to bring all volunteers up to date on current Museum information and provide in-depth understanding of specific topics.  Meetings begin with social time at 9:30 am, followed by the meeting at 9:45 am.

For additional details, fill out the volunteer information request form.

                   Featured Volunteer Positions

Docents
Museum docents guide tours of the Fenyes Mansion, History Center Galleries, Finnish Folk Art Museum, and grounds.  Their extensive knowledge adds depth and breadth to visitors’ experience of the museum.  With their in-depth training, docents learn to personalize their tours for a wide range of visitors.  Docent positions are recommended for volunteers with a strong interest in history and the ability to make a regular time commitment to educating the public.

Education Programs

PMH offers a variety of opportunities to schools and families.  Adult volunteers are needed to give student tours, assist Junior Docents while they provide tours for younger children, and coordinate a variety of craft activities at weekend and summer family programs.

Gallery Hosts

These are the smiling faces in the History Center Galleries.  They welcome visitors and help them understand the layout and content of our exhibitions.  Gallery Hosts receive training on each show, and often answer questions for visitors.

Special Events
Many volunteers take an active role in PMH’s unique educational and cultural events.  Specific positions vary according to the event, but they often include registration, distributing food and drink, assisting with tours, and clean-up.

Outreach & Volunteer Ambassadors

Earn credit for volunteer hours by distributing information about Museum programs, either at booths of cultural events or simply by networking with community organizations and providing information on upcoming programs of interest to them.

Research Library & Archives
Volunteers in our extensive archives collection assist Reading Room visitors and work to catalogue and preserve artifacts.

Museum Store Assistants
Volunteers in the Store play a vital role by greeting visitors as they enter the museum,  facilitating customers’ purchases, and organizing merchandise.  Store Assistants are often on their feet for two hours or more.

Office Assistants
A dedicated group of volunteers offers all types of behind-the-scenes assistance, including data entry, clerical assistance with bulk projects, and phone support.
