Straddling the border of Altadena and Pasadena, East Washington Village was built mostly in the early 20th century. Businesses catering to guests of the nearby Painter Hotel (later La Pintoresca) encouraged more people to move to the area permanently. Nearby residential neighborhoods, including Bungalow Heaven and Washington Square, are now officially designated historic districts and the commercial spaces along Washington Boulevard house some of Pasadena’s favorite independent businesses.
